🧭 Understanding the Bridge: Learn to Skate → Aspire → U.S. Figure Skating (USFS)

Many skaters (and parents!) find it confusing to understand how Learn to Skate USA, Aspire, and U.S. Figure Skating (USFS) connect.

~ Aspire is the bridge — it helps skaters transition from Learn to Skate into the official U.S. Figure Skating testing and membership structure. It provides the building blocks needed to start moving through the USFS test levels.

~ Even if you’re not interested in competing as a singles skater,
taking these tests still matters — they’re required for other skating programs such as ice dance, pairs, or synchronized skating.

🏅 Why Testing Matters
~
Earning USFS test achievements looks fantastic on college and scholarship applications.

~Skaters can become Gold Medalists in one or more disciplines:
Skating Skills (formerly Moves in the Field)
Singles (Free Skate)
Dance
Pairs
Some skaters even achieve Double or Triple Gold Medalist status!

🧩 How Aspire Fits
~
In Aspire prepares you to reach the Pre-Preliminary level of testing --
the first official USFS milestone.

~Once you reach this stage, you can decide whether to follow:
the Well-Balanced track,
the Excel competitive track,
or both, if you plan to compete.
(Don’t worry — testing and competition levels don’t have to match exactly. For example, you might pass your Preliminary Skating Skills test but still compete at Aspire 4.)

📈 Testing Progression Overview
Skaters generally move sequentially through the test levels.
You must pass the Skating Skills test at each level before taking the Singles (Free Skate) test at that same level.
Standard USFS Test Levels (in order):
Pre-Preliminary
Preliminary
Pre-Juvenile
Juvenile
Intermediate
Novice
Junior
Senior
Passing the Senior test in any discipline earns the title of
🎖️ U.S. Figure Skating Gold Medalist in that discipline.

⛸️ Test Disciplines Explained
~ Skating Skills (formerly Moves in the Field)
Focus: Edges, turns, power, and flow.
Each level includes 4–6 set patterns performed on both feet and directions,
such as: Stroking and power pulls Consecutive edges Spirals Waltz eight pattern
~Singles (formerly Free Skate)
Focus: Jumps, spins, and choreography to music.
Pre-Preliminary test: Demonstrates five basic jumps
(Waltz, Salchow, Toe Loop, ½ Flip, ½ Lutz) and a one-foot spin.
Preliminary and higher: Requires a fully choreographed program
including jumps, spins, and step sequences.

🔁 Flow of Testing Progression
~Pre-Preliminary Skating Skills
Pre-Preliminary Singles
Preliminary Skating Skills
Preliminary Singles
... and so on through Senior level.

👥 Adult Testing Pathway
~
Adult skaters (ages 21+) follow a separate track:
Pre-Bronze → Bronze → Silver → Gold → Adult Intermediate →
Adult Novice → Adult Junior → Adult Senior
After passing Adult Gold, skaters may move into the standard track starting at Intermediate. Some tests can even be taken virtually or by submitting competition protocols when allowed.
